Before CD-R, a mix meant a cassette: two decks, a pause button, and real-time dubbing that punished every mistake. Philips and Sony published the Orange Book standard for recordable compact discs in 1990, and by the middle of the decade a consumer CD writer had fallen from the price of a used car to the price of a decent stereo. Blank discs arrived in paper sleeves and spindles of fifty. A mix could suddenly be assembled on screen, reordered before it was committed, and copied without the generational hiss of tape. The gift changed shape too: instead of a hand-labelled cassette, you handed someone a silver disc with their name written across it in permanent marker.
What happened when you burned a CD
A CD-R is not stamped like a factory album. It is a polycarbonate disc coated with an organic dye layer and a reflective film, wound with a single spiral pregroove that steers the laser. During writing, the laser pulses hard enough to darken the dye at precise points, creating marks that an ordinary player reads as the pits and lands of a pressed disc. Nothing is physically punched, which is why a CD-R is write-once rather than erasable, and why finished surfaces differ in colour — cyanine blue, phthalocyanine gold-green, azo deep blue — depending on the dye. Finalising the disc wrote the table of contents and the lead-out track, the moment after which no further session could be added.
The 74-minute limit, and why people burned a CD at 1×
The original Red Book audio disc held 74 minutes, a capacity usually explained by the wish to fit a full performance of Beethoven’s Ninth on one side; 80-minute blanks came later and pushed slightly past the specification. That ceiling is the reason mix-CD culture had an editing discipline. Ten songs fitted comfortably, thirteen did not, and the last slot was the one worth arguing about. People burned at 1× when the drive buffer was fragile, listened to the result once end to end, and wrote the title on the disc face before the case closed. The constraint is gone now; the ritual is what people remember, and it is the part this page tries to give back.

What does it mean to burn a CD?

Burning a disc is not itself illegal — it depends on what you put on it and what you do with it. In most countries, copying music you already own onto a disc for your own personal use is permitted or tolerated; making copies to sell, share publicly or hand out at scale is not. Rules differ by country, so check your own.

Why does each song only play for 30 seconds?
Because that is what the catalogue publishes. Apple exposes a 30-second preview per track and nothing longer, so the player uses it. The capacity meter still counts each track’s full running time, which is what a real 74-minute CD-R would have had to hold.
Is it free, and can I export the tracklist?
Free, no account, and nothing is stored: your compilation, title and note live in the page and disappear when you close the tab. There are no ads. The one thing measured is a page-view count through Google Analytics, which never sees your search, your tracklist or your note — the privacy page lists the two cookies it sets.

Can you reburn a CD?
It depends on the disc format. Standard CD-R (Compact Disc-Recordable) discs are write-once only and cannot be erased or reburned. If you use a CD-RW (Compact Disc-ReWritable) disc, it can be erased and rewritten up to 1,000 times.
